Music has long been a vehicle where I can create meaningful relationships with other musicians, stories for an audience, and, most importantly, supportive spaces for younger students. Music, especially in my mentoring positions, has allowed me to see things from an educator’s perspective. These programs, where I am responsible for guiding younger students in their orchestra and solo playing, have also made me realize that most young musicians have the same potential for success but can only reach it through a supportive environment with adults who understand their backgrounds. Being surrounded by these young musicians reminds me of myself at their age, and it makes me grateful I can play a role in their musical growth, as you and so many other mentors did for me.
It is imperative that we use our voices to advocate music education. Be the voice for change your community needs and become an advocate today!
